What are One Paper Exams?
A 'One Paper' exam is a single multiple-choice question (MCQ) paper that tests a candidate across multiple subjects in one sitting. These are used by: • FPSC — Federal Public Service Commission • NTS — National Testing Service • PPSC — Punjab Public Service Commission (for certain posts) • SPSC, KPSC, BPSC — other provincial commissions • OTS — Open Testing Service • PTS — Pakistan Testing Service Typical structure (FPSC One Paper): • Total MCQs: 100 • Total marks: 100 • Time: 2 hours • Sections: English (20), Current Affairs (20), Islamic Studies (20), General Knowledge (20), Quantitative Reasoning (20) ⚠️ Negative marking: Most agencies deduct 0.25 marks for wrong answers. Do NOT guess blindly.
How to Prepare Efficiently
One Paper exams reward broad knowledge over depth. Here is an efficient 3-month preparation plan: 📅 Month 1: Foundation • English grammar rules (1 hour/day) • Pakistan Studies notes • Basic Islamic Studies 📅 Month 2: Current Affairs + GK • Read Dawn daily • Memorise capitals, currencies, world records • Complete a Caravan GK book 📅 Month 3: Practice • Solve 100 MCQs daily from past papers • Identify weak areas and revise • Take full mock tests under timed conditions 📚 Essential books: • Caravan General Knowledge — A. Waheed • Every Day Science — Dogar Publishers • Current Affairs (latest edition) — Caravan • Arithmetic & Reasoning — any standard book 🎯 Target score: 65+ out of 100 for top posts.
MCQ Strategies — How to Score More
Smart MCQ technique can add 5–10 marks to your score: ✅ First pass — fast round: Go through all 100 questions quickly (60 seconds each max). Answer only those you are 100% sure about. Skip doubtful ones. ✅ Second pass — elimination: Return to skipped questions. Eliminate 1–2 obviously wrong options. From 2 remaining, pick the better one. ✅ Third pass — guessing (careful): For remaining blanks, only guess if no negative marking. With 0.25 negative, guess only if you can eliminate 2 options (odds are in your favour). ⏱️ Time management: • 100 questions in 120 minutes = 1.2 minutes each • Don't spend more than 2 minutes on any single question • Reserve last 10 minutes for review 🧠 Common traps: • 'All of the above' — often correct • 'None of the above' — check carefully • Similar-sounding options — read all before selecting
